Spirio Spotlight

Musical Highlights From The Spirio Catalog

February brings Valentine’s Day — and Steinway & Sons Spirio offers a world of romance in all genres, including special valentines from Paul McCartney and Fred Hersch.

Claude Debussy

Leading off our Valentine’s Day set is multi-Grammy–award winning Cuban jazz pianist and composer Chucho Valdés with his rendition of “My Foolish Heart.” More of Valdés’s sensational playing is on display with some original works and an Art Tatum–style version of “I Got Rhythm.”  The Valentine theme continues with new tracks from Simon Mulligan and Earl Rose, as well a classical valentine playlist.

Also this month, the wonderful Chinese pianist Sa Chen debuts on Spirio. Known as one of the finest Chinese pianists of our day, she performs works of Debussy and Chopin, including Debussy’s Feux d’artifice (Fireworks). Sa Chen also performs the celebrated Chinese folksong Autumn Moon on a Calm Lake.

what’s New

One of the greatest pianists of the last century was the Chilean–born Claudio Arrau. This Steinway Immortal's remarkable range was rivalled by few, but he is especially known for his interpretations of core Romantic repertoire. This month we begin to explore his astonishing legacy by recreating his performances for Spirio. Arrau's rendition of Beethoven’s “Appassionata” Sonata, performed at Stockholm in 1970, is realized this month as a Spirio track as well as a Spirio video.

The distinguished artistry of Meng-Chieh Liu returns this month with a virtuosic group of Hungarian Dances by Brahms and Hélène Tysman plays Bach’s first Partita and Ravel’s mysterious and fiendishly difficult Gaspard de la Nuit.
