About The International Tchaikovsky Competition

The inaugural Tchaikovksy Competition featured only piano and violin. It was held at the height of the Cold War in 1958, when Van Cliburn, a young, tall drink of water from Texas loped into the lion’s den of Moscow and won the piano prize, a place in America — and Russia’s — heart, and a place in Steinway lore.

This year marks the 16th iteration of the now venerable competition, held every four years, expanded over the decades to include cello, voice, brass, and woodwinds competitions. And the celebrated pianists who have taken Tchaikovsky gold has also expanded in Cliburn’s wake to include Vladimir Ashkenazy, Eliso Virsaladze, Mikhail Pletnev, Grigory Sokolov, Boris Berezovsky, Denis Matsuev and Daniil Trifonov. We hope you’ll tune in to the competition here and discover the next great pianists of tomorrow.
