Annabelle Selldorf

Founded by Annabelle Selldorf in 1988, the New York–based Selldorf Architects’ projects include large new construction, historic renovations and exhibition design. In 2001, Selldorf Architects was launched to international prominence with the transformation of a 1914 Carrère & Hastings building into the New York museum, the Neue Galerie. The firm has since designed leading art galleries and museums in New York and London, including David Zwirner, Hauser & Wirth, and the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts, all of which are included in the book.

‘I believe that we have created an extraordinary destination for music that embodies Steinway & Sons’ heritage of excellence and craftsmanship.’

Steinway & Sons

Steinway Hall, featured in Selldorf’s book, brings together Steinway’s storied heritage with new musical and technological innovations in a contemporary setting. Within the Hall, Selldorf’s details reference the materials, craftsmanship and instruments that the company is lauded for, from end-grain oak flooring that recalls former iterations of Steinway Hall to recital hall seats covered in an Imperial Yellow fabric that is the same color found inside the action of a Steinway & Sons piano. Other features include a custom, bentwood decorative ceiling, and acoustic paneling in the concert hall that evokes the exquisite woods used to make each Steinway.
