SPIrio Spotlight
Cécile Chaminade’s Awakening, the Music of Paderewski, Hayato Sumino’s Chopin, & Happiness
This month we explore romantic piano works by composers who were also celebrity pianists in their day.
Joanne Polk continues to discover marvelous repertoire, and this month we welcome her third collection of Cécile Chaminade’s piano works on the Steinway Label, Awakening, or Réveil. For this project, all the music was recorded on Spirio, giving Spirio owners a unique way to experience this album. Chaminade was a worldwide sensation, a favorite of Queen Victoria, performing in premiere venues and inspiring “Chaminade Clubs” throughout the US. She continued to compose in her popular romantic style into the 20th century even as music criticism was favoring a more modern style. Polk’s lovely performances showcase why her music endures and deserves our attention.

Marek Szlezer
Hayato Sumino
A contemporary of Chaminade, Ignacy Jan Padereweski, whose birthday we celebrate this month, also performed around the world to great acclaim. It is rare to hear his style of pianism today. (You can watch a recreation of his performance of a Chopin Polonaise on a SpirioSync video.) In Poland, he is also honored as a great statesman who played a pivotal role as Prime Minister after World War I. This month we are pleased to present a set of his own engaging compositions, performed by the excellent Polish Pianist, Marek Szlezer.
For more Chopin with more of a twist, watch our new video with the sensational Hayato Sumino. He plays the “Aeolian Harp” etude followed by his own “Lydian Harp” from the Privatbrauerei Löwenherz in Wehrheim.
Our latest themed playlist is simply called Happiness, and for us, it’s a fine way to get into a good mood.
FEATURED SPIRIOCASTS
On Spiriocast this month, we present an encore performance of Víkingur Ólafsson playing Bach’s Goldberg Variations from the Elbphilharmonie Hamburg. It is available to watch on demand until November 30.
